This iconic route follows South Africa’s natural transition from the Highveld to the Lowveld and is considered one of the most scenic road journeys to the Kruger region.
Leaving OR Tambo, the urban landscape gives way to rolling Highveld plains before entering the wide-open grasslands of Mpumalanga. After a refreshment stop, the route gently climbs towards the charming trout village of Dullstroom, where misty hills and pine forests greet you.
From there, the road continues into Lydenburg (Mashishing) and on through Ohrigstad, where rugged cliffs and expansive valleys begin to appear. The real highlight unfolds as we enter the Abel Erasmus Pass — a dramatic mountain pass carved through towering red rock formations.
Here you’ll travel through the famous J.G. Strijdom Tunnel and descend the escarpment into the warm, wildlife-rich Lowveld bushveld. The scenery changes visibly as thorn trees, aloes and savanna plains begin to dominate the horizon. As we approach Hoedspruit, you may even spot wildlife near the road — a gentle reminder that you’ve reached Big Five country.
